The Chinook flight to Minden was exhilarating. We belted low along the wadi, twisting and turning to present a hard target to Terry below. A flock of sheep panicked and bolted beneath us, locals craning their necks at the wonder in the skies.

Sad Act was beside me on the canvas benches, and jumped out of his skin as the pilot discharged flares prior to landing, the final attempt to throw off missiles armed with tracking systems.

We piled down the tail ramp, our feet hitting the dirt once again. A sandstorm whipped about us, sand and small stones stinging skin through our clothing. Then, as quickly as we had come in, the whocka was gone.

I made my way swiftly to the Viper’s Nest, anxious to find Jake and Toby.

But I was to be disappointed. They were both at Zulu, and I was to leave for DC the next day and take the position of Barma team commander on the battle group QRF. The Firm was being scattered to the winds.

I knew that the best course of action for me at Minden was to keep as low a profile as possible, lest I be pulled into some duty, and so I sat on my cot bed, reading, and listening to the conversation of the Two Platoon boys outside of my room – Robson, a young soldier well known for the size of his manhood, had an erection, and the other troops were encouraging him to display it. When he finally did, the cries of awe could have been heard in Pakistan.

Owens came to join me in the Viper’s Nest, enjoying its relative comfort, insult-free now that the other members of The Firm were absent. He’d been picking up on company gossip, and told me more about the HCR CO’s IED strike.

‘The OC had told him it was a bad idea to use the wadi because One Platoon had found a belt of IEDs there, but he did it anyway. They weren’t even clearing the route, just driving it. Boys said it was a hell of a bang. They found five more IEDs during the recovery.’

‘Let’s hope he finds the next one with his head.’

‘You heard about Doyle and Waddle?’ he asked.

I hadn’t. ‘They got their Aids tests back?’

‘What fucking Aids? The whole thing was bullshit.’

‘Fuck off! I fucking knew no one would shag those two! What happened?’

Owens didn’t have the details, but these I received the next day from Jake, at Zulu. To my delight, the plan to send me to DC had been changed at the final moment.

‘One of their team got hurt and Waddle came to help him. The blokes nearby wouldn’t let him anywhere near the casualty in case he passed on the disease. Eventually the medic got there instead. Afterwards, one of Waddle’s mates goes to see their Boss, and tells him that Waddle had confessed to him that the whole thing was a plan to get them off the tour. When his mate saw it could put someone’s life in danger, he had to tell.
